What We Believe About People

People are different from every other part of God’s creation. God breathed His very breath into humanity. We are the supreme object of God’s creation and we are made in His spiritual image, to be like God in character. Sadly, we have inherited the first Adam’s sinful nature, which is rebellious toward God. Our sinful nature and rebellion separate us from God and cause many problems in life.

People were created in God’s image.

“Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness….so God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created them. Male and female He created them.”(Genesis 1:26a, 27)

People were created with an eternal soul.

“And the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7)

God designed mankind to be the steward of His creation, to manage and take care of the rest of creation.

“God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” (Genesis 1:28)

“When I consider the heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place, what is man that You are mindful of him, the son of man that You care for him? You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. You made him ruler over the works of your hands; You put everything under his feet: all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, the birds of the air and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.” (Psalm 8:3-8)

The sinful nature and rebellion of man has separated and alienated him from God. Man by himself is unable to love God or to please Him.

“Your iniquities have separated you from God; your sins have hidden His face from you.” (Isaiah 59:2)

“As it is written, ‘There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.’”(Romans 3:10-12)

God created humanity in His own image, to be like Him, capable of living forever in harmony with God and His creation. Humanity spoiled that perfect state by choosing to disobey God. Because of that disobedience, people can no longer have peace with God by their own efforts. Each one is a sinner and God cannot co-exist with sin. But God made a way to bridge the gap between humanity’s sinfulness and His own holiness through the sacrifice of His one and only Son.
